My Response to the Kindness Contract

On Jan 31 Mrs. Garcia called an assembly in the auditorium to announce plans for the month of February. She said that with the help of the iCare team she had made a list of things we should sign. Although I agree with the ideas, I don’t think that we should have to sign off on them. It seems morally wrong that we should be forced to be kind. Shouldn’t kindness come from the heart?

If we are being forced to be kind then is kindness really “about caring for others around you, wanting the best for them and understanding that they have wants, needs and fears just like you” (as it says on the sheet), or is it just something that you’re told to do. Also if kindness is enforced some people won’t do it when there’s no one there to make them. When kindness comes from the heart you do it all the time. Some one in my class asked if we have to sign the contract. My teacher said that she is going to leave that up to us, but that there may be consequences. In my opinion punishing someone for not signing a contract, forcing them to be kind is cruel. I refuse to sign this contract because although I think that kindness is vey important I don’t believe that forced kindness is kindness.
